Make the return from vacation more sustainable

A vacation can provide rest and distance from work. Returning to the same demands may make its benefit difficult to sustain.

That does not mean the break failed. It means the working arrangement needs examination as well.

Review what the founder returns to

Which decisions wait for the founder? What happens when they are unavailable? Which problems are repeatedly handled through extra hours rather than a change in ownership or resources?

Look at what accumulated during the break. A queue of routine approvals may reveal more about the company's dependence on the founder than about the founder's capacity to recover.

Change one recurring demand

Choose a responsibility that can be transferred with clear boundaries. Establish an exception rule so that the new owner knows when to seek help.

Protect a realistic end to the working day where possible. If the plan depends on answering every message immediately, decide which messages actually justify that expectation.

Persistent exhaustion, distress or loss of functioning deserves qualified support. A vacation and an operating redesign should not be treated as substitutes for appropriate care.

Review the changes after several working weeks. Did ordinary work remain manageable? Were the new boundaries respected? The aim is a role that permits recovery repeatedly, rather than a cycle of enduring an unsustainable pattern until the next break.
